This is a great discussion. The truth is that the lobbyists have created an environment that is great for the banks and miserable for consumers. And, they have no clue that it is ultimately the consumer that drives the economy. That’s why we’re in a recession. The public needs to be aware of what’s “reasonable” and what’s not. The government wants the consumer to start “spending” again, but, they allowing the banking oligopoly to take money away from the consumer to support the short term “bottom line”. This is very short sited and will prolong the recession.

Thanks for your comment Christine. I can see your point, but it looks like you haven't looked at the other side of the coin when it comes to Americans needing to "step up".

For one, there are many who profit from short sales. The money made helps the economy. That's a good thing. Additionally, those who were not able to buy a house or commercial property in a "normal" market can now do so, producing transactions which aids the economy. More good things.

Building businesses. Most brick and mortar businesses need funding, even if they have the perfect business model. How will they get it if the BANKS don't step up?

And some would disagree about sending jobs overseas: Americans get top dollar. If certain jobs, such as in the fashion industry, are not sent overseas then the cost of that garment might not be so affordable for the majority. Do you really want to spend $35. for an ordinary t-shirt?

I suspect there are lots of software, electronics and garments that you own that are made in China and India and Poland with and without American designer labels. In any case, The banks should step up and lead the way, if for no other reason than that's where we all deposit our money.

I must say I accept the new stringent bank rules. Yes make it harder to get loans and yes lower credit limits. Now, it's cruel when you've had a 750 score all your adult life and now banks are treating you like those with 580 scores. The truth of the matter is the good are going to suffer for the bad. There are a lot of people who have certainly lived beyond their means. Who max out credit cards and foreclose on their mortgages and now are looking bailouts whether it be bankruptcy, loan modifications, or short sales. So the banks are being more like Con Edison not only are they raising rates, but if you miss a month of payments they'll "shut you down". So my answer is no, it is not un-American. Now is the time for all Americans to step up. Most if not all our parents came here and made something out of nothing. Let's not be so laid back in our quest for the "American Dream" it's still achievable it's just become more than just buying a home. It's building businesses adding to the economy and not just looking for a handout. But, large corporations sending our jobs overseas, that to me is Un-American!

Hadn't thought of it like that, but you're right. We're all in this together. The more co-operation between us, regardless of our social, political or economic differnces, the sooner we'll be out of this mess. Whether Obama is on target or not, WE are the ones that will really make the difference.
